Hi - We're Ember - an app designed to liberate millions of business owners from the burden of dealing with accounting and tax by using technology to automate the process of managing their business finances and obligations.
Since launching in 2019 - we've built a product our user's love, achieved a clear product-market fit, raised a fresh round of funding and have become one of the fastest-growing start-ups in the UK today - with over 1,500 businesses running on Ember.
Over the next 6 months, we're planning to deliver exceptional experiences and automations into the hands of business owners which revolutionise how they do accounting and tax, and we're looking for an ambitious Tech Lead to take ownership over the technical implementation of our solution.
As a Tech Lead you would work closely with the Head of Product and other Tech Leads to establish and implement the technical direction for your squad and the wider Product team.
Why this role?
Salary and Equity: £90,000 - £105,000 + Equity
Flexibility: Fully remote within the UK and EU, or you can choose to work from our London office
Personal Development: £1000 training budget and 1 dedicated training day a month
Ownership: Work with the team members to define the technical direction at Ember!
About the role
We're looking for an exceptionally talented Tech Lead to join our features Squad. Your role will be to work with the Head of Product to understand the problem space and our company vision and combine it into a technical direction that helps us solve the former to achieve the latter. You unify your Squad under a common technical vision and impact Ember's trajectory both through working on the most impactful problems and being able to bring about change with effective momentum. You link technical contribution back to business impact for your Squad, and help others at Ember buy into this. You contribute to achieving Squad and company-wide goals and have a direct impact on our ability to achieve our vision.
Discovery: As a Tech Lead of a highly effective Squad, you understand that the biggest risk we face is solving a problem our users don't have or solving it in the wrong way, which is why you understand the importance of continuous discovery - both qualitative (joining the Product Manager and Product Designer for user interviews and encouraging other engineers to do so) and quantitative (validating findings using data).
Delivery: You unify your Squad under a common technical vision. You're first and foremost a delivery multiplier for the squad - unblocking and upskilling daily, as well as preparing a development and training plan for each engineer in your capacity as their mentor. You're hyper-focused on increasing the squad's velocity, whilst minimising/preventing externalities for other squads and keeping tech debt balanced and addressed. You will be expected to write high-quality, scalable code, as well as drive best practices and encourage their adoption. You're comfortable navigating ambiguous challenges on the fringes of your own expertise to pragmatically resolve current and future problems.
Communication: You have a bias for written communication which stems from your understanding of the importance of following a maker's schedule. You understand the importance of documentation - always bringing your squad on the journey with you and fostering a sense of ownership by involving them early and often. You also know how to build meaningful, productive and collaborative relationships with other Tech Leads.
Your Squad: The squad you'll be joining focuses on solving the right user problems by adding to our feature set. It's called Sparkles . This name perfectly represents our values - we're serious about the work that we do and we're seriously good at it - but we're lighthearted as we go and like to have a good pun-off. We're beautifully diverse - with women and members of the LGBTQ+ community currently making up the lion's share in this particular squad. We can't wait for you to join and bring your full self to work too.
